iTunes: Manually Adjust Play Count

by Christopher on January 16, 2009

This script does not work with the newest iTunes version 9.
Check out this post for a new script.

JavaScript Error

Please note: This only works for Windows

If, for whatever reason, you find yourself needing to adjust the play count of a song or songs in iTunes, here’s a really simple way to do it without having to muck through XML files. I don’t remember where I found this script, but it works like a charm, so I’ll pass along. Thanks to the original author, whoever you are.

  1. Download this file: AdjustiTunesPlayCount.txt (Right-click, “Save Link As…”)
  2. Change the file extension from .txt to .js
  3. Right-click the file and choose Edit. (If you choose Open, it will run the script; choose Edit)
  4. Find the line currTrack.PlayedCount = 64 and change “64″ to your desired play count. Save and Close
  5. In iTunes, highlight/select the songs whose playcounts you want to change.
  6. Double-Click the AdjustiTunesPlayCount.js file to run the script. Voila.

Chris,

Wow! What a killer app. I tried it just now and it worked so easily, just as your clearn instruction said, … now for the other few hundred duplicates …. will be slow, but I’m glad to start cleaning these up. Thanks again! Your “leave a reply” s/w is really cool too as to how it handles these postings!

Glad you knew about APOD. http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/galileo/ you also probably have many JPL images, but make sure to visit the Galileo page, we took many images thought out its many years of service when I was an Engineer on the program. Enjoy.

what’s the file extension? when i save it it’s just a text document and i’m not sure what or how i’m supposed to edit it.

@Victoria – When you download it, the file should be a text file. You’ll need to rename the file so it has a .js file extension. Then right click on the file and select “Edit”.

@Christopher I am really new to iTunes… How do I run the .js file inside iTunes? Like someone posted above whenever I run the .js file Dreamweaver opens up. Thanks for the help! And great script!

@Derek – You don’t have to run the .js file inside iTunes. You just need to have iTunes open, then run the .js file from the desktop or whatever folder it’s been saved to.

So, I just rename the file to AdjustPlayCount.js? And then it should work?

Ah, nevermind. I’ve figured it out. Thanks (:

What are you supposed to run the file with (I’m on a Mac)?  Mine opens using Safari on deafult and the playcount doesn’t change like it should.

–sorry if this question has been asked already.

I tried it. I changed the file ext, edited the play count number,  and tried to run it with itunes open.

But nothing happened, it just went to notepad :[
Any help?

Hey.. I did this but everytime I change it from a .txt file to .js file, it opens up in Notepad.. And it doesn’t edit it as well.

This is great! Didn’t really have high hopes that it would work but it works like a dream!
